Half great, half meandering This book is an interesting mix. The sections of the book that were most interesting to me were those that focused on brain scans and disease, and showed case studies of particular patients and how their brains looked inside of scans, and how that lead to a treatment that helped the patient. Completely fascinating and well written.
Likewise, some of the sections on keeping your brain healthy were interesting as well... definitely food for thought... and I like quoting the Dr's advice that more sex leads to a healthier brain.
On the other hand, sometimes the book repeats itself. For example, it is amusing that the author makes his daughter's boyfriends have brain scans so he can check them out... but he repeats this a few too many times. I also found that towards the end of the book, as the author provided recipes and supplement advice that the material really lost value. I've read a few health focused books with weak recipes in them, and would prefer to have recipes written about by cooks. It is great to know that blueberries and blackberries have powerful antioxidants and why that is important for brain health... that part was great. But I don't need a recipe for how to cook with them.
In conclusion, it was an interesting book and I'm glad that I read it -- especially the section on scans, but there are other books I enjoyed more, such as The Brain That Changes Itself, which went into a bit more depth and stayed away from turning into a self help book.
Good read for optimize the brain Very helpful information about brain functions and actionable advice on diet, exercise, medication, etc.
Easy read for average reader without medical background.
Interesting information you probably don't have "Making a Good Brain Great" may not make your brain great, but will show you how important it is to take care of it and treat it like a friend. It will also tell you how many unfriendly things you are doing to your brain every day.
It may even give you specific help for a problem you or a friend are facing. Sometimes it seems like it is trying to solve problems that only God can do perfectly.
Interesting book The book was easy to read and very informative. As with most books of this type, the author is selling or uses some form of treatment and or device to aid in brain improvement that the average person may not be able to afford.
Great Education I know next to nothing about my own brain, now I have a understanding of why I do things and why other may do things
